Why 1280 × 720 (16:9) is a commonly used YouTube thumbnail size

1280×720 is a commonly recommended 16:9 thumbnail size. Platform requirements may change over time. This resolution matches the widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio commonly used across desktop monitors, TVs, and mobile video feeds.

Formatting a thumbnail to these dimensions helps your video artwork display cleanly across device viewports without unexpected black bars or awkward letterboxing.

Resizing does not invent missing detail

Downscaling larger photos (such as a 4K frame grab or DSLR snapshot) to 1280 × 720 yields crisp, sharp thumbnails. However, enlarging an image smaller than 1280 × 720 cannot generate new details that were never recorded.

NexoPixel enforces upscale protection by default to keep your artwork clean, alerting you if upscaling is requested.

Framing: Fill frame crop vs Fit entire image

If your source image is not 16:9 (such as a square photo or camera RAW 3:2 capture), you can choose 'Fill frame / crop' to center-crop the photo cleanly into a 16:9 frame, or 'Fit entire image' to keep the full original picture intact.

Support for JPG, PNG, and WebP

NexoPixel lets you resize and export your thumbnail artwork cleanly to compact JPG, lossless PNG, or modern WebP format right from the same workspace.
