How image compression works

Digital images captured by modern cameras often contain far more data than human vision can distinguish on a screen or mobile device. Lossy compression algorithms, such as those used by JPEG and WebP, selectively discard subtle color variations imperceptible to the eye, drastically decreasing file size.

With NexoPixel, you control the exact compression quality slider (from 1% to 100%) and see immediate before/after file size comparisons before downloading.

JPEG and WebP quality controls

For photograph-heavy websites, setting compression quality between 75% and 85% typically reduces file size by 60% to 80% while retaining virtually indistinguishable visual sharpness. WebP compression offers even higher efficiency than traditional JPEG at equivalent visual ratings.

Understanding PNG lossless behavior

PNG is inherently a lossless format designed for crisp line art, UI iconography, and graphics requiring transparent alpha channels. In NexoPixel's client-side implementation, PNG compression runs losslessly—re-encoding pixel streams without discarding color data.

If your objective is to dramatically shrink a large photograph currently stored as a PNG, converting it to JPEG or WebP via the Convert panel will yield far greater storage savings than lossless PNG re-encoding.

Accelerate web performance and email delivery

Oversized images are the leading cause of sluggish website load times, poor Google Core Web Vitals (LCP), and rejected email attachments. Compressing your imagery beforehand ensures lightning-fast page loading and seamless sharing across messaging apps.
